I loved this book so much! It deserves the 5/5 stars that I’m giving it. Made You Up by Francesca Zappia is about a girl named Alex, who has paranoid schizophrenia. Throughout the course of the novel, Alex has to determine what is real and what is not. There is a trigger warning for bullying and raw portrayal of mental illness. I read this book during Mental Illness Awareness Week, because Emma Giordano from Emmmabooks sang its praises.
Alex’s only friends are her little sister Alex and Tucker. In the prologue, we meet a younger Alex at the lobster tank while grocery shopping with her mom. There she meets a boy, she calls Blue Eyes at the tank, but her mother tells her that Blue Eyes was a hallucination. Now, Alex is the new senior girl at a private school. She likes her classes, but then she meets Miles aka Blue Eyes. Didn’t her mom say he wasn’t real? Alex is now leading a semi-normal life. She’s going to parties, making friends, and falling in love.
This was an amazing debut novel! Even though I did cry at some parts, it was really funny and moving. If you want to read about mental illness this book is for you.
